“How Your Beliefs About Aging Determine How Long & Well You Live”.

The title of today’s blog is the subtitle of Dr. Becca Levy’s upcoming book, “Breaking the Age Code,” a masterpiece that shatters many commonly held beliefs about aging.

I’ll admit I’m a “fan-boy” of Becca. MEA, in many ways, is real-world proof of her most famous academic premise. Becca’s research has shown that when you help people develop a positive mindset on aging, you give them 7.5 years of additional life which is more impactful on their longevity than if that same middle-aged person stopped smoking or started exercising. We spend billions of public health dollars messaging on the latter two interventions, but we do not invest one government dollar in helping people feel good about aging.

I was fortunate enough to be given a pre-publication galley, and I loved reading this book. We are fortunate enough to host Becca Levy for a special MEA online event on April 14 at 11 am PT, just two days after her book is publicly released. I hope you’ll join us with your own questions. Here are some of the ones I’ll be asking:

  • No academic had studied how one’s age mindset affects health, happiness, and longevity before you. What drew you to this topic in the first place?
  • How do our age beliefs influence our health?
  • What are some things we can start doing today to combat our negative age beliefs? What has worked for you personally?
  • What does “successful aging” mean to you?
  • How might we create an “age-liberation” movement globally?
  • If we have this conclusive evidence that changing age beliefs have a substantial public health benefit, why aren’t we seeing more investment in programs and messaging that could leverage your research in the real world?
  • How can MEA and our global community collaborate with you as a fellow advocate?
