The Transition Everyone Looks Forward To – and Almost No One Is Ready For
Retirement is supposed to be the reward: the finish line you've been running toward for decades.
And yet, when it finally arrives, the most common emotion isn't relief or joy – it's a quiet, often unsettling sense of "now what?"
The calendar that was once packed months in advance is suddenly empty, and the inbox that demanded your attention every morning has gone quiet. The meetings or appointments, the goals, the sense of forward momentum – all gone. And with them, more than you expected.
Because it turns out that your career gave you far more than just a paycheck.
It shaped your identity and gave you purpose, responsibility, and authority – and a clear sense of what mattered and why. Without it, even the simplest questions become surprisingly hard to answer:
What should I be working on? What actually matters to me now? Who exactly am I without the job title?
And with an open horizon full of things you could do – travel, passion projects, consulting, volunteering, spending time with family, or something completely new – the freedom that was supposed to feel exhilarating starts to feel a lot like overwhelm.
Here's what nobody tells you about this major life transition:
The old model of retirement our parents’ generation experienced – the gold watch, the permanent vacation, the graceful fadeout – is gone.
Most people your age don't want that anyway. You're too curious, too capable, too alive.
But without the structure of a career to organize your days and define your identity, it's easy to feel – unexpectedly, uncomfortably – a little lost.
Maybe you're telling yourself you just need a few months to decompress. To travel, to catch up on things, to figure it out. And maybe that's true.
But here's the risk: without intentional reflection, those months have a way of drifting into years. People who planned to "figure it out" find themselves two, three years in still drifting – waiting for clarity that never quite arrives.
Not because you lacked the ability to create a fulfilling next chapter. But because nobody gave you a process for doing it.
If any of this sounds familiar, you are not alone, and you are not lost. You just need a new road map.
What Feels Like an Ending Is Actually an Opening
As disorienting as it can feel, the transition you’re going through now is one of the most exciting opportunities of your life. Because for perhaps the first time, you get to design what comes next entirely on your own terms.
Not based on a paycheck, or a title, or what other people expect of you.
But on who you actually are, what genuinely lights you up, and what kind of impact you still want to make on the world.
You just need the right tools, and people who truly understand what you're going through to help you find it.
That's why we built Reframing Retirement – a 5-week online immersion for people ready to design their next chapter
Reframing Retirement walks you through a proven, step-by-step process for laying the foundations of an exciting new chapter – one that brings you the joy, purpose, and meaning you're looking for.
During our five weeks together, you will:
Each week you'll receive carefully curated video content featuring leading thinkers, real stories, and proven frameworks you can apply to where you are right now. Plus we’ll also come together for weekly live interactive sessions where you'll go deeper with our expert faculty, ask your questions, and build what comes next.
We've gathered an extraordinary panel of experts to guide you:
their own version of this transition in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s and went on to build rewarding, exciting, fulfilling new lives.
Together, we've developed a methodology that will open your mind to possibilities, reconnect you with your authentic self, and help you create an inspired vision for this next stage of life.
We’ll walk you through the process of…
Rediscovering who you are outside of what you did. For high-achievers, identity and career become deeply intertwined over decades. We'll help you reconnect with the values, passions, and qualities that were always there – and build from those forward.
Getting honest about what you actually want. Not what sounds good or what's expected. What genuinely excites and fulfills you across every dimension of your life – from your relationships and health to how you spend your time and the contribution you want to make.
Replacing vague intentions with a concrete plan. Clarity alone isn't enough. You'll leave with a real roadmap – specific, actionable, and built around your life – so that "what's next" stops being a question and starts being a direction.
Finding your people. There is something uniquely powerful about being in a room – even a virtual one – with others who are navigating the exact same moment. People who get it, without explanation.
By the end of five weeks, you won't just have a plan. You'll have clarity, community, and a completely new way of seeing this chapter.
What makes Reframing Retirement unlike anything else you'll find
At the heart of this program is something we've never seen offered anywhere else: a Generations Panel of four experts who have each navigated their own version of “retirement” – in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s.
A serial entrepreneur who walked away from a thriving business in his 40s. An executive coach who reinvented himself in his 50s. A retired KPMG partner who built a second act in her 60s. A professor and management consultant still doing meaningful work in his 70s.
Four completely different people following different paths – all of whom actually lived through the identity shift, the uncertainty, and the reinvention and come out the other side with lives they're genuinely excited about.
They’re all here because there is no single right answer to the question of what comes next – and the best thing we can do is show you what's possible across the full spectrum of this transition.
Whatever decade you're in, whatever your version of "what's next" looks like, someone on this panel has been where you are.
Week 1
Transitions – Managing Mindsets & Identity Scripts
It's time to dream big and remove any preconceived notions or limiting beliefs you may have around retirement, so you can boldly imagine what your ideal next chapter looks like. You'll embrace the transformative power of a beginner's mindset – and begin reconnecting with your innermost self and the things that matter most to you now.
Week 2
Foundations – Taking Stock of Your Success Scripts
Get ready to take an honest look at the "success scripts" that may be holding you back from living your highest potential. You'll audit your wants and needs across all areas of life – money, home, health, relationships, recreation, and more – and start clarifying your vision for what you actually want each of those to look like.
Week 3
How Do You Flourish?
We'll drill down into what you need to revitalize your body, mind, spirit, and relationships so you feel genuinely energized and alive. You'll create your own personal Vitality Action Plan and do a mindset audit to explore where your perceptions around aging may be limiting you – so you can release that thinking and step into the full abundance of possibilities ahead.
Week 4
Purpose – What Is Your Reason?
Once your foundational needs are met, what else does a fulfilling life require? We'll ignite your curiosity and help you uncover new clarity about what excites and drives you – and how to find opportunities where your unique skills and passions can make a real, positive difference in the world.
Week 5
Regeneration – Design Your Intention Journey
It's time to bring your insights, intentions, and vision together. Your personal Regeneration Journey Plan will map the concrete steps you'll take to bridge the gap between intention and action – and give you a life regeneration timeline that fits who you are and where you're headed, whether that's a focused few weeks or a full year of exploration and renewal.
Plus: Weekly Live Sessions with Our Senior MEA Faculty
Each week, you'll join Chief Content Officer Kari Cardinale and members of our Generations Panel for a powerful 90-minute live online session where you'll go deeper into that week's tools and practices, get real-time feedback from our expert faculty, and connect with a vibrant community of people who are navigating the same transition you are.
These aren't lectures. They're conversations – with space for your questions, your challenges, and your breakthroughs.
Live sessions are held weekly throughout the program. All sessions are recorded and made available in your member dashboard, so you can revisit them whenever you need a fresh dose of clarity and inspiration.
Lifetime Access to Recordings
Can’t make a live session? No problem. Every 90-minute group gathering will be recorded and available in your member dashboard within 24 hours. And with lifetime access, you can revisit them anytime – whether you need a boost of clarity or a reminder you’re not alone.

The MEA Method: Backed by Social Science, Proven by Experience
Every element of Reframing Retirement is built on our proven MEA Method – developed in collaboration with academics from Stanford, Harvard, UC Berkeley, Yale, and the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, who have dedicated their careers to understanding modern midlife.
Together, we've developed experiential processes that combine the social science of longevity with the art of intentional living – to help people in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s design a life that's as joyful, deep, and meaningful as it is long.
MEA has already helped over 7,000 students from 60+ countries. People from all walks of life, all at their own version of this crossroads. And now it's your turn.
What people are saying

MEA's Reframing Retirement course exceeded all of my expectations. The daily lessons provided rich and diverse offerings of thought-provoking conversations, practical guided reflections, and heartwarming inspirations that have stirred me to purposeful action as I begin the next stage of life. More than that, this course delivered the gift of entry into a global community of fellow searchers. As an online course, Reframing Retirement fulfilled all of its promises and more; as a gateway to membership in the MEA alumni community, it knocked it out of the park.
– Burns Cheadle, P. Geo. (Non-Practising), PhD

I'm in the process of trying to figure out when retirement will happen. I have no overwhelming reason to retire but probably the one thing keeping me hanging on (I'm 64) is the paycheck. And given the "What Matters Most" question, the check alone may not be reason enough to stay in the workforce. So I have a lot of food for thought… There are so many takeaways that thinking everything through may need its own course! :):) Thank you!!
– Lori Pollack

I'm about to turn 80 and not planning on retiring just yet – I'm planning on pivoting my business to something easier to manage and less time consuming. The course worked for me! So don't let the word 'retire' get in your way. If you're thinking about turning that next corner and want to avoid all that incoming traffic… this might be exactly the opportunity to do that thinking. And it's often thinking that we lifelong work-lovers don't want to do. This will ease you in.

This program is for you if…
Still on the fence? Let's talk through it
Here are some of the hesitations we hear from people who are considering joining us, but haven’t taken the leap yet:
"I just need some time to decompress first." That's completely understandable – and if a genuine break is what you need, take it. But if "some time" has already stretched into months, or if the question of what comes next is quietly following you around, that's a signal. Clarity rarely arrives on its own. At some point, intention has to replace drift.
"I can figure this out on my own." You probably can. But consider how long that might take – and how much of that time you'd spend going in circles. This program gives you a proven process, expert guidance, and a community of people in the exact same moment. You could build a house by yourself too. Most people decide the tools and the team are worth it.
"My situation is too specific for a group program." The circumstances are always different. The underlying questions – who am I now, what do I actually want, what does a meaningful next chapter look like – are remarkably consistent across industries, career paths, and life stages. That's precisely why the Generations Panel exists: to show you what this transition looks like across a wide range of lives, not just one.
"I'm not really 'retiring' – that word doesn't quite apply to me." It doesn't have to. Reframing Retirement isn't about stopping. It's about deliberately designing what comes next, whether that's a pivot, a second act, a passion project, or something you haven't named yet. If you're navigating a major transition out of a long-time role, career, or business, this program was built for you.
"I've taken online programs before and they never quite delivered." Most online programs are passive – you watch videos, maybe fill out a worksheet, and quietly abandon it by week three. This is different. The weekly live sessions create real accountability and genuine connection. And the Generations Panel brings the kind of honest, experience-based conversation you won't find elsewhere.
"I don't want to be glued to my computer every day." You won't be. The entire program requires just 2–3 hours per week, including the live session. The weekly content is self-paced, so you engage with it on your own schedule. This is designed to fit into your life, not take it over.
If any of those hesitations sound familiar, you're exactly who we built this for.
