Falling Upward with Richard Rohr: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life
Is a partial scholarship for you?
We believe in making personal growth and education accessible to everyone, which is why we offer partial scholarships on a needs-aware basis for many of our programs.
These scholarships support individuals facing financial challenges, including — but not limited to — members of underrepresented communities. If financial stress might prevent you from attending a workshop, we encourage you to apply.
Partial scholarships, provided through the Association for Growth and Education, are limited to 2–3 seats per workshop and reviewed in the order received. We recommend applying as soon as possible, as scholarship decisions are typically confirmed 90–120 days before the workshop date.

When falling becomes the path to rising – a spirituality for midlife and beyond
You thought by now you'd have it figured out.
That the big questions – about meaning, identity, how to live well – would finally be settled, and that your place in the world would be clearly established.
Then midlife arrives, and instead of answers, you get new questions. Harder ones that don't resolve neatly, that make you uncomfortable and challenge everything you thought you knew about yourself and what it means to live a meaningful life.
That’s because midlife has a way of stripping away your certainties.
The beliefs that sustained you for decades feel too simple now, and the identity you spent years constructing no longer fits. You find yourself hungering for something that reaches beneath the external markers of a successful life – the career, the accomplishments, the roles you've played – to touch what's essential and eternal.
Not religion necessarily, though it might include that. What you really want to understand is what your decades of living have been for.
You find yourself pulled toward the contemplative, the mysterious, the sacred because you want the second half of your life to hold more meaning than the first.
And you’re searching for a way to make meaning from everything you've lived through – to see your losses, your mistakes, your moments of failure as valuable teachers rather than obstacles you should have avoided.
It’s time to unlock the spiritual richness that only the second half of life can offer
That's exactly what Richard Rohr has spent more than five decades helping people do.
As a Franciscan friar, spiritual teacher, and internationally recognized spiritual writer, Fr. Richard has dedicated his life's work to understanding how spirituality deepens and transforms as we age – particularly in midlife and beyond.
His groundbreaking book Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life offers a radical reframe: the failures, losses, and "falling" experiences of midlife aren't interruptions to your spiritual growth. They're essential to it.
Fr. Richard has articulated a profound framework that shows how letting go of your carefully constructed identity – your ego, your need for certainty, your either/or thinking – is what cracks you open to real spiritual maturity.
Working alongside Fr. Richard for nearly a decade is Michael Poffenberger, Executive Director of the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque. Few people have become closer to Fr. Richard's teachings and humanity than Michael, who has helped bring this work to thousands of people navigating the spiritual challenges of the second half of life.
Together, Fr. Richard and Michael are coming to MEA's Rising Circle Ranch in Santa Fe for a three-day deep dive into the spirituality of midlife.
If you're ready to transform your losses into wisdom, let go of the identity that no longer serves you, and unlock the spiritual depth that only the second half of life can offer, join us for this experience.
Learn how to "fall upward" – in an intimate small-group setting surrounded by natural beauty
During your three days with Fr. Richard and Michael, you will…
Learn to see your failures and losses as spiritual teachers
– essential experiences that crack you open to real maturity rather than evidence you've done something wrong
Practice letting go of your false self
– the carefully constructed identity, the ego's need to be right and in control, the either/or thinking that served you once but now keeps you stuck
Learn how to distinguish between suffering that diminishes you and pain that transforms you
– and why embracing the second is essential for spiritual growth
Develop practices for navigating life's challenging moments
– the losses, transitions, and ego deaths that midlife brings – with courage and self-compassion instead of resistance
Explore shadow work and the art of holding paradox
– learning to embrace complexity and mystery instead of demanding certainty and tidy answers
Move from proving yourself to knowing yourself
– understanding how the second half of life invites contemplation and presence rather than achievement and accumulation
Connect with a small group of fellow seekers
– navigating this same transition – being witnessed without judgment as you explore questions that don't have simple answers
(*Note: limited to 30 participants maximum – register early to ensure your spot)

Richard Rohr
Franciscan Friar | Author of 40+ Books | Founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation
Richard Rohr is a globally celebrated Franciscan priest, author, and teacher who has spent more than five decades exploring the intersection of Christian mysticism, psychology, and contemplative practice. Ordained in 1970, Fr. Richard founded the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, New Mexico, out of his conviction that authentic spirituality must integrate both inner work and outer service.
PBS has called him "one of the most popular spirituality authors and speakers in the world." His book Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life has become a modern spiritual classic, offering a framework for understanding how the losses and failures of midlife become essential teachers on the path to wholeness.
Fr. Richard's work has influenced millions of people across all faith traditions – and those with no formal faith at all – who are seeking a spirituality grounded in lived experience rather than rigid doctrine. Known for his sense of humor and his ability to make profound wisdom accessible, Fr. Richard creates space for people to explore the deepest questions of human existence without demanding they accept easy answers.
Michael Poffenberger
Executive Director, Center for Action and Contemplation
Michael Poffenberger has served as Executive Director of the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, New Mexico for nearly a decade. In that role, he has worked more closely with Richard Rohr's teachings and humanity than almost anyone else, helping to bring this transformative spiritual work to thousands of people navigating the challenges of midlife and beyond.
Before joining the Center, Michael spent years in nonprofit leadership and community organizing, always guided by the conviction that spiritual depth and social action must work in tandem. His partnership with Fr. Richard has been instrumental in translating contemplative wisdom into practical frameworks that help people navigate real-world transitions – career changes, relationship losses, identity crises, and the spiritual hunger that emerges when achievement stops feeling like enough.
What you'll gain
A framework for navigating the second half of life with spiritual depth
You'll understand the two primary tasks of life and why midlife demands a completely different approach – one that values wisdom over achievement, mystery over certainty, and becoming over proving.
Freedom from the false self
You'll begin the work of releasing the carefully constructed identity, the ego's need for control, and the either/or thinking that served you once but now keeps you from experiencing the spiritual richness that surrender can bring.
The ability to transform loss into wisdom
You'll learn to see your failures, disappointments, and moments of falling not as evidence of inadequacy but as the very experiences that crack you open to spiritual maturity and wholeness.
A community of fellow seekers navigating the same territory
You'll connect with others who understand that the questions you're asking can't be answered with platitudes – people who are willing to sit with complexity, hold space for uncertainty, and witness your journey without judgment.

The program was spectacular. It really surpassed my expectations. I was really surprised about how the course was curated. There was such a warm intensity and personal touch to it.
I experienced MEA as a newly diagnosed multiple myeloma cancer patient, and as a result of the things I’ve learned - I’ve banished the anxiety of being a cancer victim, am in remission, and living with a newfound energy and purpose.
Just know how grateful I am for the joy fuel you all put in my rocket ship. When I want to feel loved or just need a good smile I can think of my time at MEA, which came at the perfect time to encourage me on my journey. Thank you!
