Liminality, Lineage, and Legacy.

This is the title of our free upcoming online event with Father Richard Rohr, one of the best-known modern-day Christian mystics. Mark your calendars: May 31. Richard is based in New Mexico, so I've had the honor of becoming his friend. On multiple occasions, he's visited our Saddleback Ranch, which will be our first Santa Fe area campus.

While most of us strive to leave a legacy, Richard believes that it’s in the liminal times of our lives that we connect with our lineage, leading us to our legacy. He says:

“Liminal spaces are…where we are betwixt and between the familiar and the completely unknown. There alone is our old world left behind, while we are not yet sure of the new existence. That’s a good space where genuine newness can begin. Get there often and stay as long as you can by whatever means possible…This is the sacred space where the old world is able to fall apart, and a bigger world is revealed. If we don’t encounter liminal space in our lives, we start idealizing normalcy.”

As Robert Frost once wrote, “The only way out is through.” But, even the transformative journey of the caterpillar to butterfly has some lineage as the commonality is the “imaginal disks” that exist throughout its life in all its forms. Through our most liminal times, it is our life-propelling lineage that provides the breadcrumbs to our legacy.

This online event will be an exercise in “long-life learning.” Richard, who just celebrated his 79th birthday, will talk about his life of liminality, lineage, and legacy. We will talk about his popular book “Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life” and his take on the role of Purpose. Richard is also one of the thought leaders in our new “Designing Your Purposeful Path to Work” 8-week online course that starts June 4.
