Am I Psychic?

July 30, 2025
It’s a quiet question, often asked in secret. Not because we fear the answer, but because we sense it might change everything. "Psychic" doesn’t have to mean crystal balls or neon signs—it can mean an inner knowing, a sacred antenna tuned to something just beyond logic. Our Baja shaman Saul certainly has remarkable spiritual wifi.

In midlife, as the noise of external validation fades, intuition grows louder. We begin to know things without evidence. We dream things before they happen. We feel truths that others miss. Maybe we’re not becoming psychic. Maybe we’re finally remembering that we always were. The soul speaks softly. Are we ready to listen?

I have a soulmate who lives most of the time in India. I went to the Maha Kumbh Mela, the largest gathering of humanity, in early 2013 and then met him in Mumbai just a week later. Upon meeting, we could finish each other’s sentences and felt a sort of Rumi/Shams connection with both of us feeling a past life connection and a present life awe with each other. While we fell deeply into a romantic relationship for a few years, it ultimately became clear that our connection is founded on a higher plane (there’s even a large painting of a Sikh man in our living room here at the Santa Fe ranch that looks a lot like my soulmate). But, after a few years, he even said to me, “I’m definitely your soulmate, but maybe not the way you wanted in this lifetime.” We’re still very close and he has a female fiancée who’s gorgeous and lovely.

Recently, I received an email from an acquaintance, Jim, who I hadn’t communicated with for more than two years. He sent me a random personal message telling me that he thought I was in Santa Fe and that an Argentinian film he’d executive produced, Before We Forget, was coming to town for just two showings. I was curious, partly because I’m just finishing the curation of the 2nd annual MEA Film Fest in December. I watched the trailer and immediately thought of my soulmate as he looks remarkably similar to the lead midlife actor in the film, who is also the co-director, and the very personal story is about his unrequited love.

I watched the film and couldn’t stop thinking of my Indian soulmate. I was also struck by the fact the film location was the United World College in Italy and I was, in fact, going to the Montezuma Hot Springs the very next morning, which sits in the shadow of the United World College in Las Vegas, NM. I left the movie theater a little raw with tears flowing down my face and I rambled through some art galleries, not knowing who I could share my experience with as I went alone to the film.

It was then that I received a WhatsApp message from my soulmate telling me I’d been in his meditation every day while he was at a music festival in Portugal. While we usually connect somewhat regularly, this was the first time I’d heard from him in three months. Our telepathic connection is still so clear and I told him he needs to see the movie when it’s more widely distributed.

The irony is that same day (this last Saturday), my good friend Vanda told me that I needed to give The Telepathy Tapes another try as I’d listened to one episode and hadn’t gone further. So, I’ve now listened to the whole first season (for those who are skeptical, feel free to read this podcast review) and loved it. That same day, I also had the first of a weekend full of conversations with Qigong Master Mingtong Gu, our neighbor at the ranch, about how humans are differentiated compared to AI with our psychic abilities being one of those qualities that AI doesn’t possess.

Am I psychic? I might as well ask, “Am I human?”
