Guest Post: Embracing the Shadow: A Journey to Wholeness

April 10, 2026
Chip’s Note:

It’s been a joy getting to know one of my childhood heroes over the past six months and recognizing that we all have challenging lives, even if they look good on the surface (and, of course, Greg’s NY Times bestselling book from 30 years ago was called “Breaking the Surface”).

As we prepare for the upcoming workshop this July 6-11 at MEA Baja that I’m teaching with Chip Conley, I’ve been imagining some deeper themes of a new book I’ve been pondering, which focuses on the transformative process of shadow work and the journey of individuation. This memoir will not just be about diving; it’s an exploration of self-discovery that encourages readers to embrace all parts of themselves, including the often-hidden shadow.

The Power of Shadow Work

Central to my point of view is the concept of shadow work, as articulated by psychologist Carl Jung. Our shadows encompass those aspects of ourselves that we suppress, deny, or ignore—wounds, fears, and insecurities that often shape our behaviors in unconscious ways. In the workshop and upcoming book, I will share my personal experiences with these hidden parts, revealing how acknowledging and integrating them is essential for achieving true self-mastery and wholeness.

Through my life journey, I’ve explored my childhood traumas and the mistaken belief that parental approval defined my self-worth. I’ve found it healthy to bare my vulnerabilities, sharing moments of pain and self-doubt. Yet, within this darkness lies the potential for growth and healing. By illuminating these shadows, I hope the workshop and book will help people to confront their own hidden fears and understand how they influence their identities and relationships.

Individuation: The Path to Wholeness

The process of individuation involves integrating the shadow, leading to a more complete sense of self. For me, this journey includes moments of deep introspection and the courage to face uncomfortable truths. Healing is not a straightforward path but rather a winding journey filled with exploration and discovery. It ain’t easy (especially, in my case, when so much of my journey was on the public stage), but it is necessary.

At the heart of my life philosophy is the recognition that all parts of ourselves—both light and dark—contribute to our uniqueness. Compassion and self-acceptance are essential to this process. By embracing our shadows, we not only learn to navigate our own complexities but also cultivate greater empathy for others.

A Safe Space for Exploration

We also need supportive relationships and mentorship in facilitating the process of shadow work. My bond with my coach, Ron O’Brien, exemplifies how having someone who believes in you is key. His coaching style helped me to push past my limits, highlighting the value of a nurturing approach in revealing one’s true self.

You don’t need a diving coach, but you could use friends, family, and possibly a therapist or life coach to help you navigate your inner landscapes. Having witnessed what happens at an MEA workshop (I’m living in Santa Fe right now and hanging out on MEA’s ranch campus), I can also see the value of a deep workshop that fosters connections that can support personal growth and self-discovery.

Rewriting Your Story

In this journey of integration and shadow work, I will encourage workshop attendees to reflect on their own narratives (while the workshop is focused on LGBTQ+ people, it is also open to others who are allies). What stories have you carried from childhood that no longer serve you? How can you embrace the lessons learned from your shadows to create a more empowered and authentic identity?

During the workshop, attendees will have the opportunity to delve into these questions with me and Chip. Participants will learn techniques for recognizing their own shadows, integrating those aspects into their lives, and ultimately rewriting their personal stories. This is a chance to reclaim power and move forward with clarity and purpose.

Join Us for Transformation

We invite you to join us in July for this unique opportunity to engage with me (and you) in the exploration of our shadow work and individuation. Whether you’re an athlete, artist, or simply someone seeking a deeper understanding of yourself, this workshop promises to be a profound and transformative experience.

Prepare to embrace your shadow and embark on a journey of self-discovery!
