The Early Monk Gets The Word.


Meditation master Chogyam Trungpa suggests, “Self-deception often arises because you are afraid of your own intelligence and afraid you won’t be able to deal properly with your life. You are unable to acknowledge your innate wisdom. Instead, you see wisdom as a monumental thing outside yourself.

That attitude has to be overcome.” Chogyam was well-known for waking up before all the rest of the monks.

Early birds have full stomachs. That doesn’t suit me. I don’t love worms. As a writer, though, I appreciate filling my soul with words. And, the words are plentiful at 4:30 am. My morning ritual is waking up, meditating for 10-20 minutes, and then “dictating” from a source far beyond me or far within me. Is this why monks wake up so early?
