Stand Here for Dance Party

December 3, 2024
As many of you know, one of my favorite activities during a workshop is to get everyone up dancing before we start a classroom session.

It’s a joy to tap into collective effervescence and to feel like we’re back in high school again. So, I felt giddy when I saw this video of the group Improv Everywhere staging an unexpected dance party on the streets of New York.

They placed a decal (designed in the style of the ubiquitous social distancing circles) that read “stand here for dance party” on the ground in Grand Army Plaza in Manhattan. When unsuspecting New Yorkers and tourists followed instructions and stood on the decal, they soon found themselves surrounded by a 100-person dance party featuring a professional b-boy dance crew and a vintage 1980s boombox.

Each time you combine movement and social connection, you’re adding a few hours of longevity to your life. These are two of the foundational elements of living a longer, healthier life.

What can you do this week to exercise, hike, or dance with some friends?
