Are You Neurodivergent? No, I’m Gerotranscendent?

April 3, 2026
A few years ago, I stumbled upon the work of Swedish sociologist Lars Tornstam—and it felt like someone had given language to a quiet, mysterious shift I’d been noticing in myself and so many people in midlife and beyond.

Tornstam coined the term “gerotranscendence” to describe a natural evolution of aging—not decline, but expansion. Not narrowing, but deepening. In his view, as we grow older, we have the potential to move from a materialistic, achievement-oriented worldview to something more cosmic, more transcendent, more… soulful.

In other words: what if aging isn’t about loss, but about upgrading your operating system?

The Three Shifts of Gerotranscendence

Tornstam identified three primary shifts that tend to occur:

1. The Cosmic Shift: You begin to feel a greater sense of connection—to past generations, to the universe, to something larger than your individual ego. Time feels less linear, more poetic. Death becomes less frightening, more integrated into the story of life.

2. The Self Shift: You care less about how others see you and more about how you experience yourself. The social masks start to fall away. You become less interested in superficial relationships and more drawn to authenticity, solitude, and reflection.

3. The Social & Personal Relationships Shift: Your circle may get smaller, but it gets richer. You’re less tolerant of pretense, more appreciative of depth. You may even find yourself happily opting out of social norms that once felt obligatory.

If this sounds a bit like becoming a wise old sage living on the edge of the village, well… that’s not far off.

Why This Matters (Especially in Midlife)

Here’s the twist: gerotranscendence doesn’t just happen because you age. It’s an invitation, not a guarantee.

Some people double down on youth-seeking, status-chasing, and ego-protection. Others begin to let go—of roles, identities, grudges, even certainty itself.

And that’s where the magic lives.

I’ve come to believe that what we often call a “midlife crisis” is actually a midlife chrysalis—a disorienting but necessary transition from one way of being to another. Gerotranscendence is what’s on the other side if you allow the transformation to occur.

Signs You Might Be Gerotranscending

  • You find yourself less interested in impressing people—and more interested in understanding them.
  • You feel oddly comfortable with ambiguity and paradox.
  • You crave meaning more than achievement.
  • You enjoy solitude without feeling lonely.
  • You’re more reflective about your life story—and less attached to editing it.

If you’re nodding along, you’re not “losing your edge.” You may be gaining a deeper one.

A Quick Quiz: Are You Gerotranscendent?

Answer each question with: A = Rarely | B = Sometimes | C = Often

  1. I feel a growing sense of connection to something larger than myself.
  2. I care less about others’ opinions than I used to.
  3. I enjoy spending time alone in reflection or contemplation.
  4. I find myself questioning societal definitions of success.
  5. I feel more compassion for others, even when I disagree with them.
  6. I’m less afraid of death than I was in my younger years.
  7. I prefer a few deep relationships over many casual ones.
  8. I feel a sense of gratitude for the life I’ve lived, even with its flaws.
  9. I’m more interested in meaning than in productivity.
  10. I feel like I’m becoming more “myself” as I age.

Your Results

  • Mostly A’s: You may still be in achievement mode—and that’s okay. Gerotranscendence isn’t a race; it’s a readiness.
  • Mostly B’s: You’re in the chrysalis. Something is shifting. Stay curious.
  • Mostly C’s: Welcome to the club. You’re likely embracing the deeper, quieter gifts of aging.

Gerotranscendence doesn’t mean withdrawing from life. It means engaging with it differently—with more perspective, less ego, and a surprising sense of liberation.

Or as I like to think of it: You’re not fading away. You’re finally coming into view.
