Four Organizations Amplifying the Value of Modern Elders

One of the beauties of starting MEA is being in the constellation of other organizations in our universe that are supporting modern elders in the workplace. I wanted to highlight four of them that are all run by MEA alums (of course, this isn’t a definitive list and I’m open to other alums sending me info).

Encore Fellowships: Celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, the Encore Fellowships program matches seasoned professionals with social impact organizations to boost nonprofit capacity, build strong diverse teams, and give people seeking encore careers an introduction to the nonprofit and social enterprise sectors. It was founded by MEA guest faculty member Marc Freedman and is now led by MEA alum Darlene Johnson and has served thousands of modern elders and worthy organizations.

Sugarwork is a generative AI-powered platform designed to help companies capture and own their tacit institutional knowledge (wisdom), which is based on years of experience and is typically undocumented. Fortune 500 companies lose $31.5 billion annually due to the loss of critical knowledge, which is intensified during workforce transitions such as M&A, onboarding new talent, promoting new leaders, or managing employee exits. In other words, wisdom walks out the door when a modern elder leaves (this company was co-founded by MEA alum and facilitator Judith Williams).

NxtWaves was created by MEA alum Michele Evans as she is passionate about helping senior leaders navigate today’s rapidly evolving landscape, from AI integration to meaningful life transitions post-corporate. She combines her extensive HR background with 12 years of executive coaching experience to support leaders in their growth, whether scaling high-performing teams or preparing for the next phase of their journey using a cohort model, much like MEA.

OpenWater was started by MEA alum Paul Walborsky (and he wrote about the company in this recent guest post) and is a newly curated community of high-achieving professionals with decades of experience. By fostering connections, delivering support, and shining a light on experience, OpenWater empowers members to re-imagine what’s possible and connect them to new opportunities.

I’m proud to highly recommend these four organizations that are part of our modern elder movement to illuminate the fact that wisdom is making a comeback in the workplace.

P.S. I was fortunate enough to be on Jonathan Fields’ “The Good Life” podcast that went live this week. Hope you enjoy this episode in which I outline the 12 reasons why life gets better with age.
