Contented and Flowing.

Have you ever had a serious case of “gen-ling gap?” This week, I was texting with a Millennial friend, and our conversation went something like this:

Me: “So, what are you working on?”
Him: “Content, atm.”
Me: “Yes, I feel muy tranquilo when I go to an ATM.”
Him: “LOL. I’m working on web content, at the moment.”

Geez, I felt like such a “dope,” until I realized that word now means “super-cool,” which no one has ever accused me of being. The fact is, words have different meanings to different people, especially when it comes to age.

Take “flow,” for example. When I think of flow, I immediately imagine the psychologist with the unpronounceable name, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, who popularized this lovely state of being. My younger friends think of software product flows (of course, I didn’t know what the Airbnbers meant by “product” when I joined the company in 2013…I thought they were talking about the Airbnb homes on our website). In a recent Google doc, our Wisdom Well producer and digital strategist, Neel, used the word “flow” and “flows” more than any other word.

I guess we’re all reading the dictionary with different eyes. And it’s challenging to keep up with the lingo. At least it is for me. But that’s okay. I know as long as I show up with curiosity and passionate engagement, we are all talking the same language.

Who knows, maybe I can teach some of my fellow adults what a true live stream is as depicted in this short video I took yesterday? And, maybe a live stream with bad bandwidth is a “live trickle.”
