Why Old Age is a Time of Psychological Bliss.

May 29, 2023

MEA alum and faculty member Ashton Applewhite has an enduringly great Big Think three-minute video on why much of life gets better with age. She highlights so many of the things that are part of our MEA “reframing aging” curriculum, including:

  • We become more confident, happier, and worry less as we age
  • Becoming more aware of our mortality allows us to live in the moment, which is part of the reason we feel more content
  • Midlife is a challenging period when we have maximum family responsibilities (“sandwich generation”), we’re supposed to be “crushing it” in our careers, and we start getting sober about the hopes and dreams we won’t reach

And, in the wake of my recent TED talk (which is not yet up on the TED website), I want to highlight Ashton’s talk on ageism which has nearly 2 million views. She’s an inspiring force.

P.S. As mentioned in Monday’s post, my new book “A Year of Wisdom” is available exclusively on MEA’s website. If you enjoy my daily Wisdom Well blog posts, you’ll enjoy the 366 microdoses of daily wisdom in this book.
