5 Determinants of Wise Speech.

March 27, 2023
When we’re faced with having a difficult conversation, it’s easy to freeze up and freak out. And as long as performance anxiety takes hold of us, we’ll never be in the right frame of mind to have the conversation that needs to happen.

The Buddha describes “wise speech” as the following: “Speak with kindly motivation. Speak what is true and helpful, speak in due season and to the benefit of all.”

I’ve also seen this described in the form of a checklist:

Are my words well-intended?
Useful?
Timely?
True?
Kind?

If you do this kind of inventory before having a difficult conversation, you will likely be ready for whatever your sparring partner throws at you.

P.S. I’m enthused to be doing an online fireside chat with my friend Dr. Mark Hyman in celebration of his new book “Young Forever” this Thursday, March 30 from 8:30-9:30 am PT. You can register for free HERE.
