Four Modern Elders Discussing Modern Fires and Modern Grief

.

When I listened to Tuesday’s NY Times Daily Show podcast on Could the L.A. Fires Have Been Stopped Sooner?, I realized there are people in our modern elder community who could help me with my bewilderment of this tragedy.

Dawn Hutchinson has been to MEA many times and wears three career hats: working full-time for UC San Diego for the Supercomputer Center where they have a WiFire lab that uses modern computing to deal with our increasingly modern problem of out of control fires in urban areas. She also works for the Big Bear Fire Department mainly for mapping support and deploying to actual fires. Then there’s FEMA, where she’s a reservist. She works on all kinds of disasters with them. She’s a true public servant and her team was deployed to the Eaton fire in L.A.

Lizbeth Hamlin is an MEA alum,TQ coach, and long-time psychotherapist with a lot of experience working with loss and grief. Her own as well as others (she recently started running a widows group). She lived through Tubbs fires of 2017 in Sonoma County when she was initiated to unstoppable monster fires. Barbara Tint is an MEA facilitator, psychologist and university professor. She’s done considerable grief work while also helping people to understand their story amidst unthinkable circumstances.

Yesterday, I convened the four of us and recorded a Zoom video dedicated to helping us make sense of this L.A. tragedy and the fact that accelerating climate change circumstances are going to force us to ramp-up our ability to handle collective grief. I hope you enjoy this 20-minute video

And, let’s continue thinking and praying for everyone who’s been affected by these multiple fires in Los Angeles. To support those in need, we’ve attached a NEEDS board for assistance requests, a list of local organizations offering aid, and information on free Airbnb stays through LA211 for evacuees.
