It's a common adage: “Never meet your heroes.” Yet, here is my story that challenges this myth.

In 2012, after moving to Los Angeles and spending over a year learning English, I attended TED Active. There, I discovered Chip Conley's TED Talk on Maslow's Pyramid. Subsequently, I read his book “Peak,” which became a sort of bible for me as an entrepreneur in Colombia. I applied its principles as much as possible within my company.

As years passed—a decade, in fact—in 2023, I noticed that Chip was listed among the speakers for TED in Vancouver. I sent him a cold message hoping to say hello. To my surprise, he responded, offering me 15 minutes to chat. I must admit, I was torn between fear and excitement at the prospect of meeting one of my heroes. When we met, I presented him with a book about Colombia, and to my astonishment, he had visited my country before. 

As our conversation progressed, he suggested, “You should consider coming to M|E|A with your wife; send me an email.” I was somewhat skeptical he would respond after TED, but, lo and behold, my wife Cata and I found ourselves at M|E|A in Baja California for my birthday. It was an incredible experience, and my hero turned out to be very cool.

During our time there, Cata and I reflected on all the people we love who could benefit from what we were learning but didn't speak English. We approached Chip about the idea of creating a retreat in Spanish for all the people that didn’t speak English. That idea became a reality. Here we are less than a year after and thanks to Chip, Chiara and Jeff,  M|E|A  is hosting the first public workshop in Spanish in Baja in early April, with some of the people we love attending:

All that has transpired in less than a year makes me think about the myths we need to debunk in our lives that are totally useful. From what I can tell, please do yourself a favor and seek out your heroes. You never know how it might end.

Por Favor, Conoce a Tus Héroes

Hay un adagio común: “Nunca conozcas a tus héroes”. Sin embargo, aquí está mi historia que desafía este mito.

En 2012, después de mudarme a Los Ángeles y pasar más de un año aprendiendo inglés, asistí a TED Active. Allí, descubrí la charla TED de Chip Conley sobre la Pirámide de Maslow. Posteriormente, leí su libro “Peak”, que se convirtió en una especie de biblia para mí como emprendedor en Colombia. Apliqué sus principios tanto como fue posible dentro de mi empresa. 

A medida que pasaron los años—una década, de hecho—en 2023, noté que Chip estaba entre los oradores de TED en Vancouver. Le envié un mensaje sin esperar mucho, esperando poder saludar. Para mi sorpresa, respondió, ofreciéndome 15 minutos para charlar. Debo admitir que estaba entre el miedo y la emoción ante la perspectiva de conocer a uno de mis héroes. Cuando nos encontramos, le entregué un libro sobre Colombia y, para mi sorpresa, había visitado mi país antes. 

A medida que nuestra conversación avanzaba, sugirió: “Deberías considerar venir a M|E|A con tu esposa; envíame un correo electrónico”. La verdad, tenía ciertas dudas de que respondería después de TED, pero, contra todo pronóstico, mi esposa Cata y yo nos encontramos en M|E|A en Baja California para mi cumpleaños. Fue una experiencia increíble, y mi héroe resultó ser un ser humano espectacular.

Durante nuestra estancia allí, Cata y yo reflexionamos sobre todas las personas que amamos que podrían beneficiarse de lo que estábamos aprendiendo pero no hablaban inglés. Le planteamos a Chip la idea de crear un retiro en español para personas que no hablaran ingles y pues gracias a Chip, Chiara y Jeff, esa idea se convirtió en realidad. Todo lo que ha transcurrido en menos de un año. Todo esto me hace pensar en los mitos que necesitamos derrumbar que son totalmente inútiles en nuestras vidas y es por ello que puedo decir, hazte un favor y busca a tus héroes. Nunca sabes cómo podría terminar.
