You’ve Spent Your Life Giving Others What They Need. Now It’s Your Turn.

Robin Fisher Roffer

Your greatest story is yet to be written. Here’s how to make sure that this time, you’re the main character.

For far too long I had navigated life in the service of others, often forgetting the importance of my own fulfillment. So, when my last marriage ended, I went on an essential journey of self-discovery. I took the time to ask myself, “What do I need?”

This was soul-searching work. Up to this moment, I thought if I put others first and performed perfectly for them, I would be loved. The truth was, constantly striving for approval was exhausting.

It was not in my nature to work from a place of need. Even admitting that I needed anything was painful.

But through this transformative work, I found clarity.

I realized that recognizing my own needs is not just okay – it’s vital. I turned to my core values of love, safety and integrity. I knew that these values needed to be braided into my life, but how did I want them to show

I decided to use my values as a filter to craft a powerful list of five essential needs that would inspire me to lead a fulfilling life.

  1. Attract partners and clients who understand and appreciate that my daughter comes first
  1. Surround myself with people and projects that nurture my growth as a professional and a whole person
  1. Cultivate an independent life filled with travel and adventure, embracing each day as a gift
  1. Let go of the takers in my life, and foster connections with conscious, generous people who accept me as I am
  1. Give and receive love from a whole-hearted place of acceptance, kindness and empathy

The question becomes: if you only focus on what you need, can you still get what you want?

Making a list of what I wanted was much easier. There was a desire for lucrative clients that provided a steady stream of revenue, tickets and invitations to exciting events, meaningful recognition for my work, beautiful clothes and inspiring friends. After I made my two lists, what I needed started to arrive quickly, and many of my wants came along as a bonus.

Why is it that some people who get what they want don’t seem very happy? Maybe it’s because their needs are not being met.

We all know successful people who can manifest their dreams and desires. The great job, car, house, money, even fame… it all becomes a prize won rather than a deep need fulfilled. So, the desire for more things increases, and the feeling of satisfaction doesn’t last.

That gaping hole remains along with a feeling of restlessness and envy. Moving into a needs-based motivation simplifies, clarifies, and attracts opportunities that are much deeper and more fulfilling. That’s my experience. I hope it is yours.

Embracing a needs-based motivation opens the floodgates to opportunities that resonate with your true self. This journey is not just about redefining your professional path; it’s about reigniting your passion, purpose, and joy.

For those who want to live their life on purpose and find fulfillment, declaring what you need is where to begin.
