A reflection on what becomes possible in your second act when you stop pushing and start listening — by Master Mingtong Gu

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that no amount of sleep seems to fix.

You know it. The tiredness that lives underneath the calendar, underneath the accomplishments, underneath the wisdom you have genuinely earned. You have done so much. Built so much. Cared for so much. And yet something in the body says: I cannot keep going like this.

This is not weakness. This is wisdom trying to reach you.

I have spent more than three decades teaching Wisdom Healing Qigong — an ancient lineage of energy medicine — to people all over the world. And what I have witnessed, again and again, is this: the people who come to me are not broken. They are full. Full of experience, full of insight, full of purpose for this next chapter of their lives. What they are missing is not more information or more discipline. They are missing access to their own life force — their Qi, the energy that was always there, waiting.

In my book Coming Home to Embodied Awakening, I write about a truth that sounds simple but changes everything: you are not a battery that depletes — you are a conduit for infinite energy. The exhaustion so many people feel in midlife is not a sign that the well is running dry. It is a sign that something in the system has become blocked. Contracted. Disconnected from the source.

This is exactly what Wisdom Healing Qigong is designed to address — not at the level of symptoms, but at the root.

I think of my dear friend and neighbor Chip Conley, founder of the Modern Elder Academy, who came to my doorway in Santa Fe at a moment of deep personal reckoning. He had built empires. He had reimagined hospitality. He had founded a school for midlife transformation. And still, his body was carrying what the mind had been too busy to process — decades of accumulated tension, emotion, and disconnection from his own sacred vessel.

We spent a day together in the Lotus Kiva at Southwest Sanctuary. We practiced. We breathed. We used the ancient healing sounds to open what had been held closed. And something shifted — not through force, not through discipline, but through the simple act of returning to the body and listening to what it had been trying to say.

Chip described it this way: spending a day with this practice is like stepping into an energetic doorway where the impossible starts to feel inevitable.

That is the gift of Qigong. That is what becomes available when you stop trying to push through your energy and begin to work with it.

This September, I am bringing these practices to the Modern Elder Academy’s Rising Circle Ranch in Santa Fe for a three-day immersion: Qigong for Your Second Act: Real Energy for the Work That Matters. This workshop is designed specifically for those who have clarity about who they are and what they are here to do — but whose bodies are not yet resourced to fully live it.

We will practice together in the high desert air, under wide skies, in a close community of people who are done with surface-level fixes and ready for something that goes deeper. Through gentle movement, breath, sound, and the palpable field of collective practice, you will begin to feel what a regulated, replenished nervous system actually feels like from the inside.

Not as a concept. As a felt reality.

The practices are simple enough to carry home — ten to fifteen minutes in the morning, woven into the spaces between your most demanding days. But in those three days together, something can shift in the foundational layer, the layer beneath willpower, beneath strategy, beneath all the things you have been using to keep yourself going.

Start where you are. Continue from what you can feel.

The energy you have been searching for has never left. It is here, in the body, waiting for you to return to it. This is your inner medicine. And your second act — the one you have been dreaming into being — is waiting for the version of you who has come home to it.
